a. If you have access to the water meter, write down the meter number now and again after 24 hours.
:( no water meter
b. Dishes – number of times the dishwasher is used per day * dishwasher container size. If you do not use a dishwasher, estimate the number of minutes you spend washing dishes * 6 liters/1.58 gallons of water per minute (this is the average).
Dishwasher: 1 run * 4 gal = 4 gal/day
Hand-washed: ~15 minutes per day * 1.58 gals/min = 23.7 gals/day
c. Shower – the amount of water used per minute (use a bucket if you need to) * duration of showers in a day (include other people in the house if possible).
Estimated at about 2.5 gals/min (average, thanks Google!)
Shower lengths:
Evan: 7 minutes
Bharath: 10 minutes
Mariah: 15 minutes
Selena: 25 minutes
Jillayne: 20 minutes
Average shower length between us: 15.4 minutes per shower
2.5 gals/min *15.4 min/day = 38.5 gallons per day per person
d. Washing machine – if possible, please search the manufacturer's instructions for the washing machine. How much water does the machine consume for a single use? Otherwise, estimate an average liters/gallons of water used per load * number of loads.
Washing Machine: 4 cycles / week * 10 gal / cycle = 40 gal / week
We use about 67.9 gals of water per day per person, just according to the calculations above which excludes many sources of water usage. (slightly more than average :/ )
Cooking: ~ 30 gals per household (faucet uses on avg 27, dishwasher uses 2, plus the water used in cooking itself, this is excluding the water it takes to make the ingredients you buy)
Cold and hot drinks: roughly half a gallon per day
Cleaning: 22 (washing machine) + 5ish (other; water in the cleaning products you use, water in the tap) = ~27 gals
