I went through the trash in my bedroom. I would have done my kitchen trash but it was empty. Here are my observations:
80% paper, 15% plastic, 5% metal (aluminum foil)
I can improve the quality of my data by actually weighing it (I didn't have a scale)
The majority of my waste was wrapping paper from a Christmas gift. I could reduce this paper waste by not wrapping gifts. Even though that's sad, it's what's inside that matters anyway. Also, my bedroom trash usually gets tossed into the big trash bin before garbage collection. This is usually an overthought for me, as since the majority of my trash is paper, I should be recycling it.
